Robert Herjavec was born in Varazdin, Croatia in 1962. He was just eight years old wen the family fled the country to escape Communism. The family had next to nothing when they arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Eventually, they settled in Toronto, Canada, but since they didn't speak English, it was a hard transition. One of Herjavec's biggest influences was his father, Vladimir, who was described by Herjavec as "really tough".

His father worked for $76 a week in a factory and walked to work to save the bus fare. He taught his son never to complain and never to get taken advantage of in a business deal. Herjavec is a 1984 graduate of New College at the University of Toronto, having majored in English literature and political science. He helped support his family in the 1990s, he worked an assortment of minimum wage jobs.
