A Headbanger on the Rise

Corey was born in December of 1973 in Des Moines, Iowa to a single mother. He and his sister were raised in Waterloo, Iowa, and lived in there for most of their childhoods. He describes his hometown as nothing more than a hole in the ground with buildings.

When he was a boy he became a fan of horror movies like Halloween and Psycho. Taylor's fascination with the darker parts of human nature and masks began to develop at a very young age.

Taylor shared a traumatic event on the television series 'Viceland's The Therapist' in 2017. Corey disclosed that when he was ten an older child (16) sexually abused him. He didn't report the crime to anyone because like so many children, Taylor was threatened by his abuser. The abuser told Corey he would hurt his mom and him if he revealed the disgusting abuse he survived.

Corey's grandmother loved rock and roll music and shared her collection of Elvis Presley records with the budding headbanger. However, he found he connected more with the work of Black Sabbath and other heavy rock sounds.

Drug Problems

As a teenager, Taylor was exposed to cocaine and other drugs. He took to cocaine and overdosed a couple of times. He left his mom's house and ended up living with his grandmother in Des Moines, Iowa. She supported him and made sure he went school. As a nurturing guardian she also bought him musical instruments and equipment.

He moved out of his grandmother's house at 18. He explored the great state of Iowa and often returned to his grandmother's place in Des Moines. During this time, Corey tried to kill himself with a drug overdose. An ex-girlfriend's mom drove him to the hospital and successfully rescued him. Taylor looks back on this time period as the darkest days of his life and is grateful to all of those who helped him survive.

Rocking Out

In 1995, Taylor joined the rock group Stone Sour who played primarily in the Des Moines region while they worked on producing a demo. In 1997, Corey replaced the original lead singer of Slipknot and has produced six albums with the band.

Corey Taylor is a prolific musician. He's been in all of the following bands: Soulfly, Code Orange, Anthrax, Falling in Reverse, Junk Beer Kidnap Band, Steel Panther, Apocalyptica, Korn, and Disturbed.

In 2015, Corey won the Loudwire Music Award and was deemed a Rock Titan. Many of his projects have gone platinum and his albums continue to sell around the globe.
