Avengers: Endgame basically ripped apart the Marvel universe, but some of the series’ most beloved characters are getting a second chance on the small screen. The latest superhero to hit streaming services is good old Hawkeye, and this time the arrow-slinging Avenger has an entirely different supporting cast.

Star Jeremy Renner is reprising his role as Hawkeye in a new series of the same name that debuted on Disney+ on November 24. The actor, better known to Marvel fans as Clint Barton, says the storyline takes place after the tragic events of Endgame, with Barton mourning the death of bestie Black Widow, played by Scarlett Johansson in the movies.

Renner explained that producers wanted to answer fans’ lingering questions about the aftermath of the “big Blip.” Said Renner, “I think there’s a lot of information and I think a lot of people want to know how Clint feels about that.”

That journey won’t be quite as lonely since Barton has found a new sidekick. Actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld is on board as a character named Kate Bishop who helps Hawkeye outsmart old enemies as he tries to make it home to his family for the holidays.

Bishop may be a fresh face to casual Marvel watchers, but avid fans will recognize her from the comic books, where she eventually takes over the Hawkeye mantle. As Barton’s protégé, Bishop learns a wide range of skills while the duo share in some pretty amusing capers in and around New York City.

In one scene, Bishop gets some laughs by confusing a cosplayer representing Katniss Everdeen of Hunger Games fame for a Hawkeye cosplayer. Those in the know will get the reference — Steinfeld was reportedly in the running for the lead role in Hunger Games, only losing out at the last minute to Jennifer Lawrence.

The Bishop role is a notable departure for Steinfeld, 24, whose other recent appearances seem more focused on dramatic roles, including turns in The Edge of Seventeen, True Grit, and her most recent series Dickinson, in which the young thespian plays poet Emily Dickinson in a dramedy produced by Apple TV+. But the multi-talented performer, who as a singer has charted on the Billboard Hot 100, is no stranger to superhero flicks — she was the voice of Gwen Stacy, aka Spider-Woman, in the animated 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.Disney’s Hawkeye also stars Vera Farmiga, Fra Free, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James, and Alaqua Cox. While Johansson’s Black Widow will be absent for obvious reasons, insiders say her fictional friend Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh in Black Widow, will show up in a future episode of the highly anticipated show.
