Tory Lanez is a Canadian songwriter, singer, rapper, fashion designer and record producer. Born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, Tory came into the music scene in 2009 with the release of his first mixtape, T.L 2 T. O. He gained popularity after releasing another mixtape, Conflicts of My Soul: The 416 Story in 2013.

How he started

Since 2013, he has released six successful studio albums. He did not achieve his stardom overnight, though. Like most famous musicians, he started out as a little-known artist while living in Florida.

Creating a YouTube channel

He dropped out of high school at sixteen and started proofing songs at concerts and events. At seventeen, he began singing and started creating and releasing his own songs, which led to the release of his first mixtape. In the beginning of 2010, he came up with the name Tory Lanez and started his YouTube channel.

Meeting Sean Kingston

He started uploading videos of his freestyles and covers of various songs on YouTube. One of his YouTube videos impressed Sean Kingston, who connected him with Justin Bieber, leading to Tory getting an act on Justin's 2010 tour.

Debut studio album

Later in 2017, he released his first studio album titled I Told You through Benny Blanco's label "Mad Love" which was both a critical and commercial success. Also, in 2018, he released an album with the title Memories Don't Die which did well on charts in the US and Canada.
